2017 Golf Redesign

The Algonquin Golf Course re-design project is the third time that The Algonquin has been re-designed or reconfigured. Originally built as a Donald Ross course, The Algonquin was rebuilt in 1999 by Canadian architect, Thomas McBroom. Upon a change in ownership in 2012, the new ownership group comprised of Newcastle Hotels and Resorts and Southwest Properties, having just completed a comprehensive hotel renovation, decided that the golf course needed to be brought up to the level of The Algonquin Resort. They selected famed Canadian architect Rod Whitman, known for numerous designs include the seaside Cabot Links in nearby Nova Scotia. Whitman’s vision was to give the course a much more open, European, links course feel, all while making the course enjoyable for both casual and serious golfers alike.

The complete re-design saw The Algonquin receive seven new green complexes (#1, #4, #6, #10, #11, #12, #16). The 10th and 11th holes were replaced with two entirely new holes, and are now part of perhaps the strongest stretch of holes in Canada in numbers 10-13. A number of tee complexes were re-designed as well including the 2nd, 4th, 6th 7th, 10th 11th, 12th, 13th and 16th holes. The Algonquin also received a complete bunker renovation at the hands of Whitman. Moving away from low lying bunkers with large sand flashes, Whitman’s team shaped flat bottomed, fescue walled bunkers that appear much more hazardous than they play. With entirely new drainage and consistent flat lies, golfers feel at home in the newly renovated traps. With more than 6 acres of sod and dozens of trucks of sand being laid and distributed in the summer of 2017 by Head Superintendent Steve Williams and his team, the course held its Grand Re-Opening on July 20th for the Premiers of Canada Meetings. With continued work with regards to tree removal and course cleanup, the course re-design project will continue to incorporate exciting new features and sightlines, with the plan to improve year over year and regain our position as a top 25 course in the country.
